The first two are Expeditions: Conquistador and Expeditions: Viking. In here you will control a legatus investigating his father’s death.  He travels throughout the entire Roman Republic as well as nearby countries to spread the Roman influence all over. 

What is the game about? 

After the player’s father gets killed by unknown political opponents, you have to get to Consul Lucullus’ armies during the Third Mithridatic War. Lucullus will help you join a legion. Later on, you will take command of it and go on campaigns across Africa, Asia Minor, and Gaul.  In your journey, you will encounter actual historical people like Julius Caesar, Cicera, Cato, etc. But the game does take liberties while portraying them because your presence drastically alters Roman history. 

Gameplay

Every campaign has acted. And every act will need you to take a portion of the map with your army to move the story forward. The battle system has stratagem cards that will decide your legion’s actions.  Also, in every campaign, you will be scouting other regions and solving problems. For example, there will be story decisions like resources needed for growing your army, places you will have to conquer, etc.  Note that you will have companions in the game, but won’t have time to get chummy with them since you will be busy trying to conquer Asia Minor while also committing assassinations, breaking enemy supply chains, and exposing corruption in the rival family who want you murdered.

Expeditions: Rome is a vast game with plenty of amazing features that give layers to the gameplay. These are: 

Two Battle Systems

There are two kinds of battle methods. One of the legionary battles and the other is the story missions. In the former, you will be allowing a Centurion to command the attack with an army.  You will also be able to prepare armies before battle to improve chances of victory. In the latter story missions, you will have to control a team of characters and move on a battlefield to defeat an opponent. But there will be other objectives to complete apart from defeating enemies in the story missions. 

Several Companions

Multiple companions will join you on the mission. This includes a previous gladiator, a female scout, and a philosopher-warrior. They all have something more to their stories that make the banter interesting. This will also build up a fondness for them in you. However, if they get injured or die, then you will have to get back up praetorians to substitute them with. 

Sidequests

This game is overstuffed. There’s no need for us to beat around the bush. But if you want to play sidequests of various characters in your team and get more value for your money, then this game will give you plenty of that. 

Do It All

You can use your legion to defend and attack cities. Also, they can get resources from farms, mines, and lumberyards. You will be able to use it all to upgrade your camp. Apart from this, you will be able to craft armor and weapons at the forge as well as recruit brand new praetorians and army commanders. Did we mention that you can build a bathhouse too? Because yes you can.  Expeditions: Rome is a solid historical RPG turn-based game. But it is long. However, it’s worth it for the story missions and battle systems. They are unique and will keep you invested for hours. So go on and download it.
