This first-person shooter was released back in 2019 and was set squarely during the times of the actual original Wars that were depicted in the Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.  However, the game struggles to live up to the hype. So let us dive into the game and look at it with detailed eyes.

What is Terminator Resistance about?

Terminator: Resistance is simply a 2019 released, first-person shooter game that’s published by the Reef Entertainment company, and developed by the company Teyon for PS4, Microsoft Windows, and Xbox One.  Now, the game follows Jacob Rivers in 2028 as he becomes the only survivor of his Resistance unit that’s fighting back against the machines of Skynet after the nuclear Holocaust.  While trying to evade the Skynet Patrols, Jacob makes for an alliance with a human civilian group of survivors that had Jennifer as well Patrick, her surrogate brother.  There are also others there like Colin who is a troubled scavenger, an elderly but good man named Ryan, and Erin a nice hospital nurse.  In the game, you or Jacob will be tasked with various kinds of missions and quests to stop Skynet. In one of the missions, you will have to find out Dr. Edwin Mack and try to get him to help combat Skynet. He learns from Mack that Skynet is making time travel equipment and wants to stop that from happening. But his effort is futile as the unit he leads again gets killed and he is once again left as the only survivor.  Overtime Rivers makes his way to Skynet and tries to get a core of the machine so that they can be reprogrammed to bring terminators on the side of the resistance.  But his mission doesn’t work out as planned. On the other hand, Skynet sends three terminators back- two to kill John and Sarah Conner, and one to kill Jacob’s younger self.  The game swiftly ends right when Rivers choose between the two he is given- time travel back and save his younger-self or he could just stay in this time prior and ensure that another of his resistance soldiers fills his role as the prime protector instead. But that’s not the end as there’s an epilogue showing the result of the choice made.

Gameplay

The game is set squarely in 2028 and 2029 post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The game has multiple endings, but before we come to that, let us talk about the game itself. Terminator: Resistance has passable graphics and a rinse-and-repeat gaming system. The game lacks any innovation at all. While the choices-based ending system does keep interesting, but the missions can’t aid this aspect of the game. After all, if all your missions are about killing terminators in as many ways possible, then after some time, even that will become dull.  Not to mention that even the areas where the games are set up are hub-like. This makes you feel like you are playing in a box with nothing to explore or see. It could have been more innovative by giving the player more to do, but sadly that’s not the case. However, what is there isn’t particularly bad that you can’t play it. It’s just that you tend to expect better from a terminator game.

Features of the game

While the game in itself isn’t as interesting as it could have been but there are features of the game that makes it a good game that you could play. These features are:

Infiltrator mode

In here you play as a terminator on a mission to kill Daniel Ramirez, a tech-com officer in a bunker. On the way, you will be killing multiple people who range from tech-com soldiers to simple local scavengers. Of course, you will also be getting weapons along the way. Now, some of these weapons were used in the terminator movies like an Uzi, a minigun, and such. Once Ramirez is eliminated, the terminator accesses Skynet and sends data about John Connor.

Fight terminators

In the normal mode, you will be fighting iconic terminator villains like T-800 as well as other enemies coming from the Terminator universe.

Weapons

Know that there’s a whole cache of weapons that you will be able to use for running, sneaking, or hacking through large environments. Make sure you upgrade your weapons to get more ammo and better guns. Also, collect the chips for use in plasma guns.

Resources

These aren’t readily available at all. So you will need to be good at crafting and look for crafting things or trading them.  Terminator: Resistance relies on nostalgia to carry it through. While the game shines in some moments but mostly it’s mind-numbingly dull. You should play the game if you love Terminator and want to know more about Sarah and John Connor.
